Floating Galaxy - 2006 - A scientist acquaintance showed me some color slides of outer space taken through an astronomical telescope. Striking shots of orbiting phenomena, quasars, planets and galaxies represented by a wide spectrum of shapes and colors. As I watched the slides, I could "see" them move, slowly drifting, floating, interacting. I thought I might write an orchestral piece like this, sort of along the lines of Ligeti's Atmospheres. But then I decided that electronic media offered more control and a larger palette. |

Utah Sunset -
2007 - Sunsets in Utah are extraordinarily rich in color. In
the high altitude thin air, the sun plays on the passing
clouds, embuing them with striking oranges, lavenders,
pinks, reds and yellows in varying shades. The colors move
slowly across the sky, their shapes morphing an ever
changing pattern of transformed colors. On a camping trip
around south Utah, I saw one of these exceptional
sunsets taking form in my rear view mirror. I stopped along
side the road, sat on my west facing truck's tailgate and
watched. I "heard" the clouds passing by the sun as it moved
toward the horizon, darkening to a rich red-orange before
disappearing into the night. A flock of birds appeared
briefly and flew across the the sun. |

Night
Sea Freighter Imagine being on a supersized cargo vessel as it sails forth across a calm night sea, waters barely rippling, clouds passing, moon shining, stars twinkling, and a soft cool breeze setting the ultimate relaxation mood after a hard day's work. |

Aurora Borealis: A
Green Arc Appears- 2007 A news article reported visible northern lights that nights in Wisconsin. I saw one of these nature shows as a Wisconsin child. I remember assuming they were likely more thrilling in Canada or Alaska. The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. The displays appear in many colors although pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow. The internet provided a few excellent videos of the Aurora Borealis. I planned a series based pm the different colors but only completed the green one. |
